The book starts with an extremely engaging “Brief History of Black Holes”, which got me instantly hooked. In the Horizons Live show I attended, Cox joked about performing an 'equation solo' in the arena (which is usually reserved for musical acts), but Black Holes' equations are less a blistering thirty-second solo of astonishing impact and more like those indulgent twenty-minute soloes where you wish the guitarist would bring it home and we can get back to the song itself. We say that nothing can come out of a black hole and yet, Stephen Hawking is famous for his Hawking radiation, which does come out of a black hole. Hawking radiation theorizes that black holes are not entirely black; they can emit radiation and gradually lose mass over time. In his new book, physicist Brian Cox explores how black holes are like the Rosetta stones to a deeper understanding of not only our universe, but the very nature of reality itself.

The 'Rosetta stone' analogy proves apt, as the authors show that a study of black holes leads us to a greater understanding of the makeup of the universe and the nature of spacetime, gravity and reality itself. I have read – and mostly understood – a fair chunk of popular science in my time, and found this book severely wanting when it came to popular science's most important task: bringing the reader along. Cox has written and presented numerous TV series for the BBC, including the Wonders Trilogy, Forces of Nature, The Planets and The Universe. If a traveller matches the speed and direction of that visual information moving through space, the traveller will observe the object to be frozen still for as long as the traveller maintains that heading and speed. It started off very basic, simple enough for most educated readers to follow along, but around 30% it really got into the science of black holes and the space around them.

For any-and-all of us who interested in the leading edge of our understanding of the universe -there is no one better to explain it all than Brian Cox (now recently joined by Jeff Forshaw). At the heart of the Milky Way, there is a distortion in the fabric of the Universe caused by something 4 million times more massive than our Sun. Then moving on to Thermodynamics which is more in my wheel house and finally wraps it up with Quantum Mechanics and a bit of Information Theory. If Hawking was right, black holes would render the Universe fundamentally unpredictable and the foundations of physics would crumble. This is a beautifully add masterfully written synopsis of the universe as a whole tying together, very complicated theories and ideologies into something readable, and more importantly, understandable. Wondering if it was possible to top up my knowledge so a book wouldn't make a fool of me again, I immediately looked up entry requirements to complete a 4 year physics degree at the University of Manchester.

But this book proved me wrong from the very first spacetime Penrose diagram that slowly sent my protesting brain over the event horizon and to the singularity while being simultaneously vaporized and spaghettified. From the perspective of the book or the astronaut, you can fall across the horizon into the interior of the black hole.

If anything, I found the writing very engaging, and I think it could easily appeal to anyone who is willing to put in a little extra effort. of their book sales based on Hawking’s formula) because one of the highlights of this book is the scattering of equations that are accompanied by careful explanation and insight. What I’m trying to say is that I don’t think that this book is only for the space-ey academics; anyone can enjoy it too. This book goes into detail about different studies done in this area, providing a lot of information. It is not included in promotions available to our main range products, as stated in our terms of service.
