Description

Anyway, reading between the lines, you might get the feeling I’m not particularly enamoured by Auchentoshan. And you would be right. This is a distillery that hasn’t yet won me over. The triple distillation is interesting, but I struggle to find other hooks. And yet, it’s a hugely successful brand that’s in the Top 20 best-selling Scotch single malts in the world. There is an audience for their lighter, accessible style. I’m just not sure if I am part of that audience.

Nice aroma of malt, savory spices, fruit, butterscotch, overripe citrus and a general oily earthiness. It’s not super complex, but it has a nice weight to it that makes it come across as bold. Nose: Poached pears and dusty spices – cinnamon (highly pronounced) and anise sit on top of a bed of wild honey and breakfast cereals. Later, unripe apples and fruit pastilles are joined by moist tobacco leaves and green grassiness. Quite fresh, quite clean and altogether rather pleasant.

Winner of 8 spirit awards

This gets talked about as a starter whisky or a good whisky to introduce beginners to. If you're looking for bold character in a whisky then you'll be wasting your time with this. However, whilst it's a simple whisky, it's got some subtle positive characteristics, and when you come home and don't want much complexity, boldness, or iconoclasm, and just want a simple, light and subtle whisky, this often it's the spot. Taste: light- to medium-bodied. That smoke I noticed on the nose is more apparent now. A touch of bitterness as well. Not too sweet. The vanilla and citrus are there and gone. The signature nuttiness of almonds coming through now. Auchentoshan 12 Years is a single malt with a pleasant amount of character. It’s a whisky that I wouldn’t say I’ve been avoiding reviewing, but I haven’t exactly gone out of my way to secure a bottle so I was incredibly happy to see it show up in the Flaviar tasting kit I was sent – which is a neat thing in and of itself. Unusual for a Scottish distillery, Auchentoshan practices triple distillation. [10] [4] :16 The mash tun at the distillery is a modern stainless steel semi-Lauter mash tun, with a copper canopy. [4] :15 Generally the final stage of Scotch whisky production involves distilling the fermented mash in two copper stills. In Auchentoshan, a third still (known as the "Intermediate Still") helps to give a final spirit strength of 81% ABV (162 proof). [10] This triple distillation, in addition to an unpeated malt, [5] gives Auchentoshan a more delicate and sweet flavour than many Scotch whiskies. [6] Maturation is mainly in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry butts, though some Auchentoshans will mature in French wine casks. [11]

While the Classic is the more entry-level Auchentoshan, it is not one you can get here in Ontario. So the 12 Year Old is much more ubiquitous here. The Auchentoshan 12 Year Old replaced the distillery’s 10 Year Old expression as their entry-level single malt. Bottled at 40% abv, the whisky has a deep, off-color gold appearance. Another way to look at it would be as a bright, well-polished bronze coloring. Nose is lemon citrous, honey, light fresh white oak, toasted almonds, some light spice, pepper and ginger. light barley. Palate - Fast, sweet arrival with fruitful tannins and a dry fruity complexity. Something citrus'y in here as well. Auchentoshan 12 Years is the entry malt for the Auchentoshan distillery which is one of only 3 remaining Lowlands distilleries after the whisky market crash that caused a rash of distillery closures in 1983. Like many of the now defunct Lowlands distilleries, Auchentoshan practices a triple distillation which is a fairly common practice in Ireland, but much less so in Scotland where the majority of distilleries practice a 2x distillation. Finish: The licorice note detected on the palate carried through on the finish that I found to be of medium length and drying. It had a slightly harsh quality that detracted slightly from the experience. This dram makes me feel like I’m sitting in front of a warm log fire whilst outside the wind blows a gale, the rain falls and the temperature drops. The TV is on and I’m watching my favourite football team win 5.0 against their biggest rivals and their star player has just got sent off for diving in the penalty area. It doesn’t get any better.
